Should I attempt a live bent grass green or go synthetic?
This one is easy! The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America says that nearly 90% of natural greens installed on residential property are either removed or lost to disease within 2 years. Additionally maintenance costs on a bent grass green are estimated at over $6,000.00 per year if done right. A SofTrak green offers a tournament quality surface with very little maintenance.
Is the turf you use the absolute best available on the market and why?
SofTrak turf is a specialized product and is manufactured from fibers specifically designed to simulate the softness, texture, density and color of natural bent grass. SofTrak turf was scientifically designed and exclusively manufactured from its inception to be a high-performance putting surface and was never designed to be used for any other type of synthetic sport surface.
What type of in-fill is used, and why is the type of sand used so important?
The SofTrak putting green system integrates a unique in-fill system called RQS-2000 into the fibers of the turf to create a natural feel and softness – two critical components in achieving a true roll. Some competitors use ordinary sand, which causes the green to compact and harden over time. The size and round uniformity of the RQS-2000, is one of the secrets of the SofTrak system’s ability to perform as a high- performance practice green, maintaining shot absorbency for years to come.
Is your installer technically capable of incorporating a fringe apron around your greens?
Fringe aprons offer an aesthetically pleasing and functional element to your golf green. Make sure your installer knows how to install a fringe properly and be sure the turf used for the fringe is the right height, density and color. Being able to install fringe properly will separate the men from the boys very quickly.
How important is the base under the putting surface?
The base work is a key part of the process. A lot of companies overlook this, indicating to the customer that base work is a 6” pile of rock leveled out and compacted, and prepared to lay a piece of turf on. Fill it with sand and putt away! This is the worst possible scenario. In the golf course industry there are specialized companies who have a high degree of expertise in shaping a green to be playable and to function as a high-performance surface. The same applies to the putting surface you will be buying and installing. Be sure the base is installed properly and is shaped the way you want your green to play. If it is not, you will not be happy with your purchase.
What are the claims made about the performance of Synthetic greens?
In the synthetic green business there are two types of greens: Sand infill greens built similar to the greens at your local golf course, or the nylon products built on a slab of concrete, which in some cases provide a good putting surface but are limited to being flat with no undulations. A nylon green does not accept a shot from any distance, therefore not performing like natural grass green. A sand infill system such as SofTrak’s can be customized for individual playing style, and the speed can be varied to make it faster or slower.
Is your installer thoroughly trained?
To be the best at anything, you need to devote an extraordinary amount of time and energy toward that specific task. Designing and building a high-performance system capable of living up to standards a golfer, will place on performance of his putting surface, requires the installation crews be highly skilled and pay close attention to detail. Constructing a putting surface is not building a flat square football field or soccer field.
Can your golf green builder/designer give you a list of references?

The most valuable references are those that are unsolicited and are freely given to others by satisfied customers that truly appreciate and respect the workmanship and professional mannerisms they have experienced. United Sport Systems staff and crews are honest, hard working and quality craftsmen. Your expectations will not be satisfied; they will be exceeded.

How many golf professional have not only endorsed, but have the product at their home.
United Sport Systems has installed SofTrak putting surfaces at the homes of several PGA tour professionals, and leaders in major industries. We have installed greens around the world and we continue today.
How many years has the golf green designer/installer been installing synthetic turf?

The number of years an installer of synthetic turf has is not as important as the number of satisfied customers that willingly recommend the installers services and products. A high number of years of doing mediocre work are not as favorable as few numbers of years doing exceptional work. The New Generation Synthetic Turf Industry is a relatively newer industry as compared to other industries. SofTrak Putting Greens have been around for less than ten years but have been installed by talented professionals around the world and throughout the USA.
